MEIMELALI.COM: Russian National Arrested After Extorting Thousands Of Dollars From An Expat In Bali.
A 56-year-old Russian national named Evgenii Bagriantsev has been arrested for extorting an expat from Uzbekistan in Bali.
The Director of the Bali Criminal Investigation Bureau, Kombes Pol Djuhandani Rahardjo Putro confirmed that the suspect was arrested after extorting a businessman named Nikolay Romanov from Uzbekistan in Bali. During the attempt, the suspect tried to impersonate Interpol in order to gain trust from the victim before finally getting arrested by the police on July 1st 2021. According to the information, the incident began when the suspect who impersonated an Interpol agent attempted to intimidate the victim who has been running a motorbike rental business in Bali.
“The suspect threatened the victim by saying that the business he has been running has violated the Indonesia legal system, so he told the victim to give him USD 28,000 (IDR 400 million to remain silent.” Kombes Pol Putro said on Tuesday (6/7). Other than that, the suspect also told Nikolay to give him 21 motorbikes if he’s unwilling to transfer him the cash. Few months later, the suspect contacted the victim again and told him to transfer another USD 8,461 (IDR 121 million) cash and 1 motorbike to him. After filling a report to the police regarding this case, the victim arranged a meet up with the suspect as he pretended to agree with the suspect’s requests to give him the cash and a motorbike.
The officers who were already in position at the location arrested the suspect when the victim handed him the cash on July 1st 2021. During the interrogation, the suspect admitted that he has been doing this illegal activity with two partners. “The other suspects who are also Russian Nationals are now fugitive, while the investigation is still underway to find other potential victims.” Kombes Pol Putro concluded. The suspect has been detained at the Bali Police Department along with evidence such as a car, USD 1,400 (IDR 20 million) cash and a motorbike for further investigation.
